CANADA ON THE PODIUM IN FOUR EVENTS AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

WINNIPEG (August 27, 2022) – After winning medals in four events, Team Canada is celebrating its best results at the World Championships in a decade.

“We are so proud of our entire team,” said Jen Saunders, Racquetball Canada’s High Performance Director. “Their preparation and hard work was rewarded with solid on court play and podium results. We continue to build our program and are pushing towards the 2023 Pan Am Games.”

The Team Events have been an exciting addition to the format in international competition and Team Canada has done well. Lee Connell of Saskatoon, Kurtis Cullen of Brandon, Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge and Sam Murray of St-Hubert are celebrating a silver medal win in the Men’s Team Event.

Murray and partner Frédérique Lambert of Montreal had success teaming up in Mixed Doubles advancing to the finals where they ended up in the silver medal position.

In Women’s Doubles, Lambert and Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau finished with a bronze medal. Iwaasa and Murray also reached the podium in Men’s Doubles, winning bronze.

Team Canada placed 4th overall of all the nations competing. Athletes not on the podium who also contributed to the overall team placement were Danielle Drury of Saskatoon and Juliette Parent of Saint-Jacques. The team was coached by Michel Gagnon of Montréal and Evan Pritchard of Winnipeg.

The International Racquetball Federation World Championships took place in San Luis Potosí from August 19 to 27. 93 athletes qualified to compete, representing 15 nations. The World Championships are held every two years.
